Creggan: the sequel 21.11.14

19/11/2014

Dearcán Media’s Creggan: the sequel will be screened on Friday 21st November at 4pm in Rath Mór in Creggan (in association with Guildhall Press).

In 1979 the Irish journalist and human rights campaigner, Mary Holland, made ‘Creggan’, a documentary that centred on the experience of the Derry estate of the title. It was considered controversial as it allowed working class nationalists to talk about their experiences of conflict over the previous 10 years, and it was banned from broadcast for a period as a result. The documentary went on to win the coveted Prix D’Italia prize, and in the Creggan itself, the film was very well received as it gave voice to the estate’s lived experience at that time.
Now a number of those who featured in the original film, along with present-day inhabitants of the Creggan, want to update their film to tell others about the journey that they and their community have made since 1979.

Beidh ‘Creggan: the sequel’ léirithe ag Dearcán Media, le feiceáil i Rath Mór sa Chreagáin ag 4pm ar an 21ú Deireadh Fómhair, 2014 (in eineacht le Guildhall press)

Rinneadh ‘Creggan’ i 1979 ag an t-iriseoir agus gníomhaí cearta daonna Mary Holland.  Bhí scannan s’aicí ag amharc ar taithí an Creagáin, dearcadh a bhí conspóideach ag an am cé go raibh cosmhuintir náisiúnacha na Cathrach páirteach ann.  Cuireadh cosc ar an scannan ar feadh tamaill mar gheall ar seo.  Baineadh amach ‘Creggan’ an mórdhuais Prix D’Italia, agus sa Chreagáin féin, bhí glacadh an láidir leis cé go bhfuair cónaithe an estát seans a éispeireas féin a léiriú.  Tá daoine anois a bhí páirteach sa chéad scannan, in éineacht le cónaithe eile, ag iarraidh uadáta a déanamh ar scéal s’acu chun turas an phobal ó 1979 ar aghaidh a mhiniú.
